Marlene
Being at
Progressive Health has opened up my social life. I
have a boyfriend, friends at work, in the neighborhood
and friends within the program. I like being independent
in my home and being able to make my own decisions.
Progressive Health is there when I need them.
Marlene,
who shares a residence with another Progressive client
in the Supported Living program, sustained her brain
injury in a 1991 motor vehicle accident which left
her with multiple deficits affecting all aspects of
her life. While she will require a long-term, supervised
living program, she continues to make progress in
the areas of interpersonal social skills, complex
problem-solving, leisure and therapeutic activities,
all of which impact her ability to maintain her physical
and cognitive capabilities. Marlene has been successfully
employed for over three years with the ongoing help
of Progressive Healths vocational specialists
and a job coach who is available to assist her with
any assignments which are unfamiliar. She maintains
her home, holds a job, and is in a long-term relationship.

Frank
I
used to have nothing to get up for in the morning, now
I own my own business and use the strategies I learned
with Progressive Health to aid me in my success. If
I did not have the PHPI staff I wouldnt have a
life.
Frank faced numerous challenges adapting to a new country
and culture when he moved to the United States from
Italy at the age of 13. In 1993, Frank was involved
in a motor vehicle accident in New York City in which
he was found 60 feet from the point of impact. Along
with many physical injuries, Frank sustained a traumatic
brain injury and once again faced emotional, physical,
and cognitive challenges.
Frank
has continued to improve and grow stronger through years
of rehabilitation and hard work. He has learned many
strategies and skills designed to help him overcome
and compensate for his deficits. His unwavering desire
to work independently has been an integral part of his
amazing recovery.
At present, Frank maintains his own home, runs a successful
coffee shop in Milford, and enjoys watching his three
children grow up. He continues both group and individual
therapy at Progressive Health, which aids him in dealing
with life's challenges and contributes to his success.

Oscar
Oscar suffered a traumatic brain injury when he fell from
a piece of machinery at work which caused subsequent disorientation,
agitation, and short-term memory loss.
Following his acute rehabilitation, Oscar participated
in Progressive Healths Transitional Living program
where therapy helped improve his orientation, problem-solving,
social skills, safety awareness, and ability to live independently.
Supervision has decreased commensurately with his improvement.
Oscar participated in a pre-driving evaluation and has
returned to the road.
With the cooperation of his employer, Oscar successfully
completed work trials with vocational counselors and is
currently back to his full-time position. After his return
to work and home, Oscar participated in outpatient therapies
and has since been discharged from the program. He continues
to work and live independently using the strategies he
learned from Progressive Health. |
